What is an MGA?

A Managing General Agent, or MGA, is a specialized type of insurance intermediary that is vested with underwriting authority from one or several insurers and can administer programs and negotiate contracts on behalf of an insurer. 

MGAs are useful for traditional insurers as they not only provide professional underwriting services, but also give access to niche and speciality markets without the need for insurers to set up their own distribution channels.
